Starting in 1980, Mercedes introduced the NG trucks with an updated range of engines, spanning from 95 kW (130 hp) to 276 kW (375 hp). This generation featured wind deflectors on the lower front corners of the cabs, a removed horizontal chrome bar on the grille, black model badges, and black mirror casings. The chassis for semi-trailer tractors was redesigned, lowering it by 120 mm (4.7 in).
A new cab variant, the GR-Fahrerhaus, provided a true long-distance cabin with a raised roof and wardrobe locker, positioned above the L-Fahrerhaus. This cab was wider, evident from the flush wheel arches, and lacked a rear left side window as well as rear windows.
Additionally, a new 18.3 L (18,275 cc; 1,115 cu in) V10 diesel engine was introduced, with the turbocharged version producing 500 PS (368 kW). In 1985, a four-axle (8x4) version was made available in select markets, such as Great Britain. These trucks began as three-axle units and were converted to four axles at the former Saurer plant in Switzerland.
